To Strengthen National Ceramic Design, INKA Partners with an Italian Studio

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – PT Internusa Keramik Alamasri (INKA), the manufacturer of Essenza ceramics and a subsidiary of PT Intikeramik Alamasri Industri Tbk (IKAI), has entered into a strategic partnership with the Italian design firm Digital Design Srl (MILLE997). This collaboration aims to strengthen research and development in architectural surface design to boost the competitiveness of the national ceramic industry. The partnership was announced on the sidelines of the Build Better 2026 exhibition held at The Hall Senayan City, Jakarta, on Friday, October 9, 2026. Through this partnership, INKA combines domestic production capacity with MILLE997’s expertise in designing interior materials across various sectors, ranging from the hospitality industry to international fashion lines.

This move comes amid a shift in ceramic usage trends, which are no longer limited to floor tiles but have evolved into full-fledged architectural surface elements for walls and building interiors.

Desra Firza Ghazfan, President Director of PT Intikeramik Alamasri Industri Tbk, said that the national ceramics industry needs to transform from simply relying on production volume toward the development of high-value-added products based on design and architectural function. According to him, the next opportunity for the ceramics industry lies not merely in larger tiles, but in playing a greater role in architecture. “The Indonesian ceramic industry must offer more than just production capacity. We need to create products that are chosen for their quality and design,” said Desra.

Transformation of the National Ceramic Industry The shift in focus of the ceramic manufacturing industry toward architectural surfaces requires alignment between production technology and material aesthetics. On a global scale, design integration is a key factor in enabling local products to compete with imported ceramics and penetrate export markets. MILLE997 founder Francesco Govi explained that a modern design approach emphasizes the harmonization of materials—such as wallpaper, glass, and porcelain tiles—to create a cohesive spatial character.

“For MILLE997, design isn’t just about decorating surfaces; it’s about creating spaces that reflect the style, values, and personality of their users. This principle aligns with a development direction that connects floors, walls, and interior elements,” said Francesco. Meanwhile, INKA Director Angelica Lie added that strengthening the design aspect is a key strategy for domestic manufacturers to attract the domestic market of architects and interior designers. This collaboration is expected to bridge the ideas of local creative professionals into value-added manufactured products.

More efficient factories can produce better products. However, it is design that makes people choose them. “We want to be a hub for creative collaboration where the ideas of Indonesian architects and interior designers can be developed into surfaces used in real projects,” concluded Angelica.
